As LCDR Spock, UFP Star Fleet, once remarked; “We must acknowledge once and for all that the purpose of diplomacy is to prolong a crisis.”
I’m glad the Iranian nuclear program was severely crippled (if not outright dismantled altogether!) by Trump’s midnight raid. It’s been long overdue, these fanatical medieval raghead religionists have had it coming since 1979. A close friend of mine’s brother was taken hostage at the American embassy in Teheran.
Oh sure, I can think of plenty of caveats…maybe they moved some of their stuff into storage before the bunkerbusters crashed the party. Maybe our attack wasn’t as successful as we hoped, maybe they will do something really stupid in retaliation that we will come to regret, maybe if we get into a full all-out slugfest with them we will take some losses, yadda-yadda. And it distracts the rest of the world from what’s going on in Gaza and the West Bank. But on the whole, I agree with Trump’s action here. If we had done nothing the Mullahs would still want to punish us. You can’t reason with cults.
Does this mean I don’t like some aspects of it? Of course! That goes without saying.
Trump’s main justification may have been to distract us from some of the political quicksand he is sinking into domestically. His Liberal critics seem incapable of responding in any way other than the usual whining and hand-wringing…and helpless inaction. The Iranian people may hate their government, but history has shown that even revolutionaries tend to rally around their leaders when they are being blitzed by a third party. Unfortunately, it will cause the MAGA peckerhead base to gloat gleefully and follow him mindlessly in any other lunatic maneuver he indulges in. And of course, the critical constitutional aspects of this attack aren’t being addressed in the way they might have been if our flyers had all been shot down and were hostages in Iranian prisons now. After all, nobody ever regrets the fights they win.
But Iran has been stopped dead in its tracks, both nuclear, conventional, terroristic and asymmetric. And the rest of the middle east is privately happy how this turned out, no matter what they may say about it publicly. At the very least, it has bought us some time. Nobody will know if Trump is bluffing now. And in the meantime, military planners in Moscow, Pyongyang, and Beijing are also going back to the drawing board to rethink their own military fantasies. As much as I hate to admit it, sometimes its better if YOUR Commander in Chief has a reputation for being a little crazy.
As LBJ once remarked; “Even a blind pig can find water sometimes”.
