A thought on anger. June 29, 2012 10:08 pm bowser

In a recent post RobVG suggested I had “gone over the top” in responses to TBs comments on compassion.  Rob has a valid point, I have gone over the top on numerous occasions here, and have copped to a few of them.  I get excited at some things.  Not very often, 5 or 6 times a day.  Max.  His observation is accurate as far as it goes.

And, I firmly believe that anyone who doesn’t get angry in certain situations isn’t fully human.  That famous picture of a Vietnamese child with napalm burns is one.  I’m aware that many people will see that picture and talk of collateral damage, that there is much suffering involved in bringing peace, freedom and democracy to the oppressed, that it’s sad but excusable for grown men to do such a thing.

I firmly believe that defending $30 million bonuses for executives while there is one single child going without medical care or food or shelter cannot be excused.  How much they have made for their company is irrelevant, and usually they have lost money.  Those people place an obscene excess of money over a child’s welfare.

It is obscene for Mitt Romney to have made $20 or $25 million a year for doing nothing constructive, and especially obscene when there is a hungry citizen.  Or citizen without medical care.

Anyone who defends that lacks that quality which distinguishes Man from Amoebas.  Even dogs are more generous.  Anyone who doesn’t get angry about such abuses of the financial system is missing something essential to a human.

I get angry about that.  It’s extremely unflattering to belong to a species which has those values, I’d like to think I have evolved past my dog.  And those people continually remind me of his superiority.  After he’s had enough he’ll share.

No one has to like this, no one has to dislike it.  But I do realize than anyone who disagrees has at least some basic, necessary values I don’t respect.
