The current drought and corn shortage is causing ethanol plants to shut down. Expect corn price to continue to skyrocket. Corn is in everything from dog food to soda sweeteners.
The government subsidized ethanol production for the last 30 years to the tune of about 6 billion a year. Thankfully this has ended.
The promise of ethanol was in emissions reduction, not as a fuel source.
The fuel we burn contains 10% ethanol. More than that and your car won’t run well. Ethanol also causes a 10% drop in fuel economy.
The thing I’ve never been able to understand is is the claim it will add to the fuel supply. Looks like a zero net increase to me. Even less if you include the cost of fuel to produce it.
