What’s the matter with Michelle Bachmann?

She was a GOP nominee for President, she’s on the Intelligence Committee, for Chrissake.
“These allegations about Huma and the report from which they are drawn are nothing less than an unwarranted and unfounded attack on an honorable woman, a dedicated American and a loyal public servant,” McCain said in a speech on the Senate floor.
[Glenn] Beck chimed in that “John McCain and all of the elephant media are falling right in line with the Muslim Brotherhood.”
And Bachmann agreed: “He went on the Senate floor, and he gave a spirited defense of Huma Abedin, who is a friend of his.”
For those of you who haven’t been following this, Ms Bachmann has been engaged in a “how many Jihadists are in the State Department” campaign (now where have we seen that before, yes, even before Congressman Allen West’s (R-FL) hauntingly familiar outburst a few weeks ago.)

What has happened to the Republican party? Who are these troglodytes? Where do they find such bottomless pools of hatred? How can their colleagues (with the notable exception of John McCain and a handful of others) tolerate these thugs in their midst? How can so many people (even in my own state) vote these goons into office?
