The military has said that the repeal of the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy regarding homosexuals has not had any effect on force readiness. I suspect that is true now, would not have been true 50 years ago.
I was talking with a gay male nurse at the hospice one slow night. We were talking about homosexuality and it’s acceptance by the public. I said that I thought gays should be allowed to marry, there’s no reason they shouldn’t suffer like the rest of us have. Society shouldn’t protect them from misery.
He laughed, and said that if Fundamental Christians thought marriage was so sacred why did they allow divorce and adultery? Since they do, their professed belief in the sanctity of that sacrament is nonsense.
Can’t argue with that one.
I then threw out that I believed parents were afraid of homosexuals making passes at their straight sons at a formative time of their life. The answer was elegant.
First, he said, homosexuals are interested in homosexuals. Not recruiting, but experienced homosexuals.
Second, he added that society tolerates and even encourages passes by men at women. The stereotypical picture of a woman walking by a construction site getting whistles and off-color remarks has always been regarded almost as a Norman Rockwell topic.
And yet that isn’t done in public by homosexuals. Another stereotype shot in the butt, so to speak.

There has been an enormous change in attitudes towards gays.

I know from experience that one part of that piece is untrue.
- Now, what if you had been a woman.
