I tried posting this last night from my iPhone, but no such luck.
So, do we have any favorites here?
I’ve been reading a collection of Wells’ works, both novels and shorts. I read “The Time Machine” eons ago, as a high school requirement, but I think I enjoyed it far more than any of my classmates.
Of the set I have, the overall winner so far is “War of the Worlds,” formatted in the same style as when it appeared in Pearson’s Magazine, back in 1897.
“The First Men in the Moon” runs a close second.
I just finished his short-story, ”Empire of the Ants.” Nothing like any of the movies out there, dealing mostly with an intelligent form of army ant taking over the South American tropics, and thus threatening global occupation. (Whatever happened with all those “killer” bees, anyway? A kind of interbreeding to docility?)
Anyway, my absolute favorite I got a year ago is Wells’ two-volume “The Outline of History.” It’s a very fascinating read, covering the formation of the Earth, through microbes, through dinos, through mankind, and our many petty squabbles. It was last updated by his son, I think back in the 50′s, so it’s not too awfully primative, and very concise for the period in which it was written and published.
