The bird census October 13, 2013 6:30 am ER

I live in single-family, suburban-type, detached housing inside a major urban area. Surrounding my development are drainage canals and an abandoned golf course. These are the species I have noticed in my neighborhood (ranked by numbers).

Grackles,
Mockingbirds,
Muscovy Ducks (feral domesticated),
Turtle doves,
White Ibis, (we live near the Everglades),
Blue Jays,
Burrowing Owls,
Shrike,
Nighthawks
Anhinga (a type of cormorant),
An occasional egret, heron, bittern and Nile goose.
One chicken hawk.
Migratory Swallows (in season),
Migratory buzzards (in season).

With the exception of the grackles, which used to be rare but are now everywhere in great flocks, all these species are present in much smaller populations than what I remember from growing up in similar environments as a kid.

Many species seem to have disappeared altogether, even the English sparrow, which used to be ubiquitous. Most of the perching song birds are gone: robins, orioles, cardinals, tanagers, thrushes, finches. The hummingbirds are gone, too. I think I miss them the most.

Have any of you lived in your area long enough to have noticed similar changes?
