Clothing serves a purpose.

Besides protection from the elements, it can be used to enhance our appearance, by obscuring our flaws and enhancing our strengths. It can also signal our social and economic status.

But what is the role of fashion? How is it that what is acceptable to wear varies over time, and indeed, changes quite frequently, and is dictated by celebrities and merchants?
