Question about soldering. June 21, 2014 5:44 pm bowser

I have a problem.  I’ve got some #8 stranded wire I’m trying to affix to a three-prong plug.  The prongs come out of the molded plastic for ease in attaching the wires, then poke back in.

The wire is a bit big for the mounting on the prongs, it’s difficult to get it into place and screw the clamp over it.  I’d like to solder it.

However, my 100 watt soldering gun will not touch it.  Doesn’t begin to get it warm enough.

I can see 260 watt electric guns for sale, some bigger even.  And I see small butane torches available.  I’ve used larger butane torches for soldering plumbing joints, am reasonably proficient at that, but never tried the small butane affairs for electrical connections.  Clearly, that’s what they’re for, as they aren’t powerful enough for plumbing.

Has anyone tried these for electrical work?  Medium sized work, something for which 100 W electric isn’t enough heat?

Thanks for whatever attention you can give this.
