A couple of years ago was travelling through central Texas. I had to take a leak and just ahead was a rest area. Super! I pulled off and did not find a rest room. Wasn’t one. I thought that was odd, but I found a jar and stood in the open door of my van, happily peeing.
I heard a cheerful voice saying something, and turned. It was an ordinary looking guy, 5′ 10″, 150 lbs., 35 or 40 y/o, saying something to me. About 50 yards behind him was a white pickup with another guy in it.
To make a long story shorter, the guy was gay and hustling me. He explained he liked older guys. I tried as nicely as I could to tell him I wasn’t interested, didn’t blame him, just wasn’t my thing. About that time he walked in front of me and very rapidly groped me. I jumped, he quickly moved away, laughing. I very rapidly realized there were two of them, there was no one else in the area and while I felt the situation was under control right now, it may not stay that way.
I started talking faster, and maneuvered my way into the driver’s seat, under which I have a machete. Very shortly he left, wandering back to the pickup with his friend in it. I drove away.
I can understand the guy approaching a lone guy if that is what those places are known locally for. May be why there are no rest rooms there. And, I’ve been wondering if I might have been in more danger than I thought. I just Googled “texas”, “roadside” and “deaths” and found that Texas has more murders along the roads than any other state.
I won’t make the mistake of letting someone sneak up on me like that again, I promise.
