Seveneves by Neil Stephenson October 6, 2015 9:06 am SDG

The moon blew up without warning and for no apparent reason.

That first line pretty well hooked me. I’m about 100 pages from the end. Its been a while since I tackled a 800+ page book, but I have to say I’ve really enjoyed it. I call this sort of science fiction geekporn, since it incorporates pretty much all of the tech that could be feasible within humanities grasp in the near future and explains the tech as it goes. Orbital mechanics features heavily in the plot and the narrative, but is well explained for those who have at least a passing interest in it. I think my wife eyes would glaze over pretty quickly in a book like this, so it isn’t for everybody.

My only complaint is that the book should have ended with part 2. Part 3 could have and should have been another novel. I’ve enjoyed reading it, but its a new story and should have been a new book.
