On November 4th, 1956:
The Hungarian revolution against Soviet oppression was viciously crushed by the authoritarian regime… as a last gasp of futile resistance the revolutionaries took to the short wave radio and pleaded to the world for assistance:
“We ask for the help of every writer and scientist of the world, of
every writers association, of every academy, of intellectual
leaders. Time is short! You know the facts, we do not have
to tell you these. Help Hungary! Help the Hungarian people!
Help the Hungarian workers, scientists, workers, peasants
and intellectual workers. Help! Help,! Help!
The appeal is repeated in English, German and Russian… and silenced…
My father heard that broadcast as a kid listening to his short-wave and told me about it nearly 3 decades later- it had a big impact on him.
And was silenced… I am sure he or she suffered the consequences for their act…
The tweets were deleted just hours after they were first posted.
The Democratic National Committee issued a one-sentence reaction to their unexplained removal:
“Vladimir Putin would be proud.”
