I know we’re all having a good time watching the Trumpster grotesqueries and overall barbarities. He is rapidly trying the patience of his party and even his closest supporters, and he is losing the great American Middle day by day.
But need I remind you Mr Trump is still just the tip of the proverbial iceberg? Even if he were to vacate the office in disgrace tomorrow, the policies and plans of those who elected him, and of his party and political allies, remains the same.
His (and their) goals will not change. They are determined to cut taxes for the rich, devastate programs for the poor, and institute policies which will savage labor and health law, safety and labor regulations, health and environmental protection, and a fair deal for the middle and working and lower classes, indeed, every class but the ownership and propertied castes, and perhaps the highest strata of administrative and managerial drones they will require to run their empire, will be cut adrift to survive on theeir own.. A century of social legislation is under threat, and in order to accomplish this goal, they have shown themselves completely capable of allying themselves with some of the most reactionary and brutal aspects of American society, history and culture. Anti-intellectualism, racism, religious fanaticism, militarism, nativism, jingoism, sexual intolerance and bigotry and a thinly-disguised fascism will be the tools employed to further their unholy economic and political agenda. And it will be carried out by manipulation and perversion of our courts and the electoral college and voting system–our most fundamental traditional freedoms.
But these cultural throwbacks and civic treacheries are merely a means to an end. The key characteristic of this ideology of the Trumpers and their supporters is to see America as two nations, the makers and takers, and they have, by their own words, made it abudantly clear which camp they, and we, belong in. They have nothing but contempt for us; they feel they have every right to dictate how this civilization will develop and how it can be assured that they prosper in it.
Think about that the day Mr Trump leaves the White House. Those who inherit his mantle will be no different in their aims, no matter how much more subtle and competent they may be in how they implement them.
