American economy today summed up in a single news item December 12, 2017 4:19 pm Robert

Skirball fire sparked by illegal cooking fire, California officials say

The Skirball brushfire that caused residents of Los Angeles’ affluent Bel-Air neighborhood to flee their multimillion-dollar mansions last week was sparked by an illegal cooking fire, the Los Angeles Fire Department said in a press release Tuesday.

The fire broke out on Dec. 6 just before 5 a.m. at an encampment under Interstate 405 and Sepulveda Boulevard in Long Beach, the department said. The fire then spread through arid landscapes was fanned by Santa Ana winds, which have exacerbated five other fires in the state in the past week.

“Encampment”…what a pretty word, so idyllic…girl scouts roasting marshmallows, maybe?

No, we know they mean homeless encampment. A fire at a homeless encampment burnt down half a dozen mansions in Bel Air.

Is it just me, or does the irony just keep getting grimmer and grimmer?

(Edited to add the word “economy” to the title, because saying it summed up all of the multifaceted dumpster fire which is America today would be incorrect.)
