Kindle Poe January 13, 2018 5:16 pm RobVG

For some reason I was compelled to read the Raven this morning. I’m not a huge fan of poetry but decided to buy the Kindle version of “EAP’s Complete Poetical Works”. It’s actually free and includes a biography and notes.

It’ fairly obvious that in asking painful questions for which he knew what the answer would be, he wanted to submerge deeper into his dark sadness at the loss of Lenore.

Then I wanted to know who Lenore was. There was the earlier poem “Lenore”. I wonder if Lenore was his old flame,Sarah Elmira Royster, to whom he was engaged, possibly twice. The death of Lenore may have represented the loss of the relationship. Thoughts?

  • I never dug into the emotional or historical aspect of his poetry. by hank 2018-01-13 20:55:24
