Bohemian Rhapsody Flashmob April 25, 2019 2:48 pm Robert

“Flashmob” musical performances have become a dime a dozen, but I wanted to share a video that I found downright moving. It’s at a shopping mall in Germany, and as the first few piano notes echo through the space, you can see that, by 2016, people know what’s about to happen. They smile in anticipation, and then when they recognize “Bohemian Rhapsody”, they begin to sing. And that’s a flashmob at its best–they can never by truly spontaneous, but the nucleus of performers can act as a catalyst to trigger spontaneous participation by hundreds of others. When that happens, it’s a thing of beauty. The song’s original arrangement was a glorious farce, but in the echoing cavern of a shopping mall, hundreds of voices turned it into a hymn. When the janitor trudges through, pushing his cart…singing…the moment is complete.
