Obviously a moonshot, a scam, or both – they offer no engineering details or prospects beyond fancy graphics, general engineering buzzwords, and an “Invest” link you can’t right-click for security on both sites. Still, it’s an interesting prospect, and an idea of what we could make with current, tested aerospace technologies. With their publicity video, you could almost believe it’s happening.
Essentially, Orbital Assembly is explaining how they plan to use Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starship to ferry personnel and material to orbit for the construction of a rotating space station, which will apparently act as a orbital hotel. Remote-controlled Robonauts would be part of the cargo/crew, and used to continue construction, and later maintenance, non-stop between supply missions. The habitat modules (Either B330s or BA2100s, both based off TransHab technology) themselves on the rim would be supplied courtesy of Bigelow Aerospace, for both living and social quarters. Once completed, an array of Sierra Nevada Dream Chasers would act as life-boats, should the need arise.
As an orbital hotel, I think the idea is trash. As a research station/mining depot/refuelling station/… anything useful, I think it’s a grand idea. A real-life Deep Space Gateway, with all the features of the Nautilus-X. While no single company would be willing to take the risk, a joint-venture or consortium of Space Exploration Technologies, Bigelow Aerospace, Sierra Nevada Corporation, and others could definitely make this work. Hell, Planetary Resources might even have a shot at business if this happened.
Right now, all of that’s speculation, and Orbital Ventures is a money-pit, one way or another. That being said, the two titans of the space industry, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk, both have master plans for space. The former wants to bring us to orbit, the latter wants to bring us to Mars. By using existing, proven, technology, we can use one’s dream to realize the other; and both dreams realized would awaken a new age.
I can’t wait to see how the next 20 years goes.
