Just starting the book “What’s the Matter With Kansas?” and a couple of interesting points have been mention so far. I thought I’d share them.
First, and very illuminating, consider the “stars” of each faction. The heroes of the Conservatives have money, have made themselves rich, and anything which takes money away from them is “confiscatory”. Giving back to the society which made them wealthy is considered foolish.
The “stars” of liberals tend to be intellectuals, hang out at Harvard and Yale, consider public service a duty and are less concerned with accumulating vast wealth.
Now here’s the kicker. Your average middle class schmuck, of which I’m one, I don’t mean “schmuck” derogatorily, can aspire to great wealth, could join the upper class with the right lottery ticket. Or some other way. But could get there.
The average “schmuck” cannot aspire to great intellectual heights. It is out of their reach, both intellectually and financially. That intellect has to be developed, needs to learn something besides a technical job. They learn to look at both sides of an issue, work with people who advocate for that which they oppose, learn to understand. Harry Truman was careful to appoint opposition folks to panels which advised him.
Therefore, the conservative schmuck chooses to be an almost upper crust wannabe rather than a failed intellectual. The liberal schmuck chooses to follow the intellectual liberals, probably thinking that with more education he or she could be one.
In my opinion, simply my opinion, I think we see that here.
Now, the second great usurpation by the Conservatives is that of the real hot spots. Gay marriage, abortion, guns are all single issues for voters. It is ridiculous that someone would abandon all other issues so they could carry a concealed gun, but they do it. A lot. Cousin John may die chasing a Muslim in Pakistan for the glory of God knows who, or 7 million kids will not have lunch, but bigawd Bubba can carry his hidden pistolover.
That’s it for a start. I thought it was fascinating and quite interesting.
