August Arctic Ice September 6, 2022 5:16 pm ER

SIE minimum is usually about mid-September, NSIDC will publish the results in early October. The average August Sea Ice Extent suggests this year’s minimum SIE will be near the last decade average, but well above the 2012 record. This will make ten years since the SIE record was broken, usually a new record minimum is set every five years or so. Is this an outlier, or are we seeing a trend here? Check the interactive graph and explore the trends over the last decade.

While you’re there, you might want to check the Antarctic Sea Ice Extent (Remember, its winter Down Under). It looks like we may have a record-breaking winter minimum this year in the South. Especially if the Thwaites glacier collapses…
