Turns out that manned rocket Launch Escape Systems (LES) are something of a fraud. The consensus, which can be verified by Googling the topic, is that the system could not respond as fast as a rocket would disintegrate. The crew capsule would be overwhelmed before the problem could be diagnosed and the LES triggered.
