The era of the USA leading the world in Science and research has definitively ended April 11, 2025 3:02 pm RL

Details on cuts proposed in the President’s budget have finally become public.
The cuts in research funding are a death-blow to America’s science community. It is insane, it is as if their goal from the start was to put an end to all the science institutions. The cuts won’t just slow or set us back… no, we are not talking about crippling science for a few years, we are talking about killing brutally and making sure it can never be resurrected…
At NASA the budget would cut Astrophysics and heliophysics by two thirds. The Roman Space telescope, which is nearing completion would be cancelled. Over all of NASA’s funding for science will cut in half! The budget callS for the CLOSURE of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (which certainly would be a real problem for me personally, but would also be throwing away one of the Crown Jewels of American Science).

Will it get through congress? God I hope not, but it is clear- this administration is going to war against Science and is using scorched earth tactics.

I am looking at options outside the USA. Given the work I do, if Goddard isn’t closed, my job is safer than many others (until they start firing people based on which party they donated to)- researchers in Earth Science, however are totally screwed… But even if I still have a job in a year, its looking probable that the conditions would be so intolerable that I wouldn’t want it…

In effect our government is intentionally driving its scientists overseas.
