Why does the GOP want to kill people? May 9, 2024 6:53 am ER

https://www.yahoo.com/news/theres-gop-plan-execution-spree-094525927.html

The Republican party has always been keen on expanding the number of judicial executions and death penalties; not only by a reduction on stays and holds, but also by increasing the number of offenses requiring the extreme punishment.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not opposed to the death penalty in principle (particularly when applied as punishment for corporate crimes!). 8) I’ll be the first to concede that there are some crimes that do demand the death penalty. I just don’t have confidence the government can carry it out fairly. My objection, and I believe the major objection of many liberals, is that government has shown an alarming tendency to execute innocent people, especially if they are poor or black. Based on the concept that it is far better to let a guilty man go free than it is to punish an innocent one, I submit the ultimate punishment should be withheld, or at the very least, postponed, whenever possible.

It is not too surprising then, that Project 2025 addresses this issue, proposing to increase the number of capital punishments, as well as the crimes that demand it as punishment. Isn’t it amusing that the same political philosophy that believes our elected representatives and courts are incapable of administering immigration law, safety, consumer, trade or labor regulation, environmental protection and tax policy fairly, is nevertheless so eager to provide it with the mandate and authority to kill citizens?
