More Sanford shooting news. March 28, 2012 8:44 pm ER

The plot thickens.

I’ve just watched some police video on the Lawrence O’Donnel show of George Zimmerman being brought to the Sanford police station on the night of his shooting of Trayvon Martin. He was handcuffed behind his back, and the video showed him exiting unassisted from the back seat of a police cruiser and walking through the station garage where another camera showed him escorted by officers through another room inside.

There was no evidence of wounds or injuries, either on his face or the back of his head, and there was no evidence he was in pain. His clothes showed no evidence of blood, or any evidence of a struggle, although a jacket he was wearing over his shirt showed what appeared to be a single vertical stain about 6-8 inches long and an inch wide just to the left of his sternum. There was no way of knowing whether the stain was fresh or old, or blood, or whether it was his blood or Trayvon’s, or how it got there even if it was blood.

Other items of interest that were discussed on “The Last Word” were a telephone interview with the mortician who prepared Trayvon’s body for burial, who found no evidence of a struggle on his body.

There was also an interview of the mother of a child who partially witnessed the incident, but did not see enough to give a conclusive account of the shooting to the police who interrogated him. The investigators mentioned to her that they were investigating a possible manslaughter case. This was the same officer who reportedly recommended arresting George Zimmerman but was overruled by the State’s Attorney decision to release the latter.

None of this proves anything, of course, I only mention it because this case is nowhere being closed yet, although there appear to be two opposing schools of thought who seem determined to convince us it is.

Why is it so important to politicize such a random incident, as if who is guilty here proves anything of fundamental importance to the society as a whole? One side seems determined to show that there is a plot by whitey to brutalize all colored people and this is all the evidence they need to prove it, and the other seems determined to conclude that it is all a liberal media plot to discredit America. Both sides are reeking of righteous indignation and seizing on every little detail and rumour (perhaps even inventing a few) to push a case that cannot be settled unless it is investigated by an impartial police agency. (I don’t trust Sanford P.D.one bit.) Frankly, I’m fed up with both fucking sides.
