The Great Cuban Sandwich Smackdown April 15, 2012 10:09 am ER

At last, proletarian Ybor Tampa is claiming its undisputed right as the true originator of the sanwiche cubano, to the snooty indignation of its bourgeois rivals in the Miami sauguesera.

http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/04/14/2748730/tampa-claims-the-cuban-sandwich.html

At least, the Miami Herald article is fair, and the reporter definitely did his homework. This is dedicated to all those of you who have ever enjoyed a real Cuban sandwich, or even any of its inferior imitations: my home town’s contribution to world civilization.

My own favorite: The Silver Ring Café especial: Cuban marinated lechón asado (roast pork) and ham, swiss or provolone cheese, on French stick, mustard, mayo and sliced pickles. The salami is optional.

It may be heated, but NEVER pressed. And never, ever served with lettuce and tomato. If you want a salad, order one separately.

Wash it down with a cold cerveza (for lunch), or a hot café con leche (for breakfast).

And if I could find a real auténtico today, I might even treat myself with a smoke, for dessert.
