Sympathy for Steve December 22, 2015 7:08 am ER

Steve Harvey screwed up big time at the Miss Universe pageant by calling the wrong winner. But let’s be honest, who hasn’t pulled a similar screw-up in his own life? Most of us, however, don’t do it in quite as public and dramatic a way.

In my senior year in high school, my team, the Brandon Eagles, met their bitter rivals, the Turkey Creek Gobblers. It was a match we dreaded, because the Gobblers always won and they always moved on to the playoffs and a chance at the conference championship.

But this year it was different. The game was tied at the end of the fourth quarter, and the Eagles had the first down, just short of field goal position. An Eagle got the ball, eluded the Gobbler defense, and ran towards the goal. There were defenders behind him, but there was no way they could catch him with the head start he had.

As the runner approached the goal line, he proudly held up the ball over his head for everyone to see–and dropped it! The fumbled pigskin bounced along behind him, was recovered by a Gobbler and returned to mid-field before he was finally tackled. The Eagle defense was totally demoralized. In just a few quick plays, Turkey Creek took it back and scored, just seconds before the clock ran out.
