I just watched a South African double amputee run in the 400 meter qualifying race. He finished 2nd.

He had some kind of birth defect (I think) and his legs were amputated just below the knee when he was a child. The legs he uses for running are called Cheetah legs and had to be approved by the Olympic committee so as not to give him an unfair advantage. :)
