We may have just started a new arms race with our calling out the Russians on violations of the arms reduction treaties signed by Messrs Gorbachev and Reagan in the 1980s. But I support the Trump administration for doing so.
Although I’m sure many of his critics will simply point out that it is an attempt to distract us from his many other problems, (and there is probably some truth to that!) the fact remains that the Russians are cheating, and they are lying about cheating. And this is born out not just by the White House, the Pentagon and State Department, but by our NATO allies, our own Intelligence agencies (no one can accuse them of toadying up to the Trumpers) and the Obama White House as well. You didn’t think I’d just take Trump’s word for it, do you? I already fell for the Domino Theory and WMDs, I will not fall for another lie.
What the Russians have done is a threat to world peace and stability. But challenging them on this irresponsible move is only the first step. What now remains to be seen is if this issue can be resolved satisfactorily given our President’s sycophancy to the Kremlin oligarchy. If our recent dealings with North Korea and Saudi Arabia, or our response to Russian moves in the Ukraine, are any guide, I doubt it.
