Fires, Pine Beatles, and Logging August 15, 2012 8:55 am RobVG

Deaths of trees ‘catastrophic’

Intermountain Resources statement to Ag committee.

The statement isn’t long.

So is the ecological benefit of dead timber more important than reducing fire potential and economic interests? You can blame the fires on the beetle or global warming but there was something we could have done.

Those in forestry science are starting to realize that lightning strikes and the fires associated with them provide natural fire breaks that protect the forests. They are natural “clearcuts”. They are re-thinking how clearcutting can actually benefit the forest.

The question is, is a stand of burned and dead trees more pleasing and important than a green, planted clearcut. With the wildfires we see the effect of the choice that has been made for us.
