The first war America lost. August 13, 2013 8:25 pm bowser

As an example of the historical bias we are taught as children, and never question as we get older, there is the War of 1812.  While American history books trumpet the war of 1812 as an American victory, the reality is different.

America declared war on England in 1812 largely to end impressing  of US seamen by the British navy, opposition to British support of Native Americans and to attempt to annex some of Canada.

After 32 months and many deaths, after the White House and Capital were burned, the peace treaty negotiated restored every condition and every boundary in place at the start of the war.  It effected no changes, simply cost money and lives.

That isn’t a victory by any standards, unless one wants to consider not being wiped out a victory.  And I know I was taught differently.

And it’s strange that the last time the US was invaded, 200 years ago, was by an English-speaking country.  So much for the “If your child speaks English thank a serviceman” bumper stickers.  Strange, isn’t it?
